About

andrew-lawrence-photographerImages. How do I see them? Why do I see them? How do I take them? These are all questions I’ve been asked and for a long time struggled to answer. I guess it’s analogous to trying to explain instinct to someone. You can’t explain it, it’s just there. There was a moment however, when I began to understand it a little better myself.

My cousin’s husband is an incredibly talented singer/songwriter. He can play and write music, not only on and for his guitar, but for other instruments he doesn’t know how to play. He also writes all the lyrics. He only plays original pieces he has written. One day I asked him, ‘how do you DO what you do?? I don’t understand. I’ve played piano for years and years but I have never been able to do what you do..’. His answer was what I realized mine was, he simply didn’t know how or why he could do it, he just could. He would ‘see a song’ in his head, and inside of 2 hours in some cases write down all the music and lyrics to an amazing song and with a little polishing it was perfect. I realized this is how I see images. I just ‘see’ them. It can be in a glimpse, a brief moment in time, or a long time looking at one subject or object. No matter, I just ‘see’ things that I want to capture and then do the best I can to do it. I’ve never taken a photography lesson. I’ve been shooting since I was about 12 years old and been fascinated with cameras for as long as I can remember. It likely helped that my father was keen with a camera as well. He taught me the basics of aperture, shutter speed, film sensitivity and light with my first Nikon FM2 35mm film camera that I still have today. I never ever forgot what he taught me, and have built on it since now into the realm of the world of digital cameras.

I shoot because I love to. I love to make an image that fascinates, creates wonder, or fuels the imagination or curiosity of the observer. Photography is one of my biggest passions. I love to record special moments, people, places, and sometimes simply things. I can find inspiration almost anywhere and see beauty in many things yet I can’t explain why. I just see it. My camera is my way to record these things so I never forget them and can enjoy those moments again. Travel, adventure, extreme sports, meeting new people, relationships, experiencing new things, and nature are all things that I value deeply and hold close to my heart. A camera is usually close by my side when I do any of these. I’m so fortunate to have seen and done the things I have with people I love and been able to record the many special things I see and experiences I’ve had.

I hope you enjoy my photos as much as I enjoy capturing them.
